오유경 & 한성필

Subtle Moments

AMC Lab은 설치작업을 주로 하는 오유경 작가와 사진작업을 하는 한성필 작가의 이인전을 개최한다. 오유경의 ‘바람의 탑’은 제주도 곳곳에서 찾을 수 있는 사람들의 기원의 장소인 ‘본향당’을 재구성한 작품이다. ‘본향당’은 제주도민들이 섬에서의 하루 하루 고된 삶을 마주하며 마음을 담아 신에게 기원했던 장소이다. 구슬을 쌓아 바람의 공간을 만듦으로써 오유경은 우리에게 마음 속 깊은 곳에서 우러나오는 소리에 귀 기울이는 시간을 선사한다. 한성필의 ‘My Sea’는 하늘과 바다가 맞닿은 사진을 통하여 보는 이들로 하여금 사색에 잠기게 한다. 하늘과 바다의 경계가 희미하게 펼쳐진 작가의 작품은 자연만이 줄 수 있는 무한함을 경험하게 한다.

오유경(b.1979)은 자연의 순환에 대해 끊임없이 생각하는 작품을 선보이고 있다. 작가는 특히 인도 라다크 지역을 여행하며 수천만 년의 시간이 걸려 형성된 자연 앞에서 우리가 사는 현실은 사실 그다지 견고하지 않음을 실감했고, 자연의 섭리와 에너지가 만들어내는 현상들을 예술작품으로 표현하고자 하고 있다. 작가의 대부분의 설치 작품은 모듈로 구성되어, 어떻게 조합하느냐에 따라 다른 모습으로 탄생한다. 이번 전시에 설치된 ‘바람의 탑’ 역시 그러하다. 매번 새로운 조합으로 다른 탑이 완성된다. 오유경의 작품이 가지는 이러한 유연성은 작가가 지속적으로 탐구하는 자연의 순환과도 맞닿아 있다. 2012년 에르메스의 레지던시 프로그램에 참여하여 메탈이라는 재료를 탐구한 후부터는 물질과 비물질의 경계를 이용한 작업에 열중하고 있다. ‘바람의 탑’에서는 물질적 재료인 수정의 반전과 투명성을 이용해 환상적인 느낌을 자아낸다. 탑을 구성하는 재료 중 하나인 투명한 수정구슬에 비춰지는 모습을 통해서 관람객들은 실재와 환영을 넘나든다.

오유경은 서울시립대학교에서 환경조각학을 공부한 후, 파리8대학 학원에서 조형예술학 석사학위, 파리국립고등미술학교(ENSBA)에서 조형예술학 국가학위(DNSAP)를 취득했다. 노암갤러리(2009), OCI 미술관(2011), 스페이스 K(2015), 챕터투(2017)에서 개인전을 진행하였고, 서울시립북서울미술관, 오설록티뮤지엄, 우손갤러리, 갤러리바톤, 성곡미술관, 팔레드 도쿄(파리, 프랑스) 등에서 다수의 그룹전에 참여하였다. 경기창작센터, 고양창작스튜디오, 프랑스 파리 시떼 국제예술레시던시 등의 레지던시 프로그램에 참여하였다. 작가의 작품은 OCI 미술관, 크리스찬디올재단, 에르메스재단 등에 소장되어 있다.

사진작가 한성필(b.1972)은 진짜와 가짜, 현실과 상상, 눈속임, 온난화나 원자력 발전소 등 환경적인 문제까지 다양한 관심을 광범위한 작업으로 풀어낸다. 특히 대표작인 ‘파사드’ 시리즈에서는 자연광과 가로등을 이용해 실재 풍경과 가림막의 평면회화의 경계를 넘나들며 독특한 작업세계를 구축했다. 이번에 전시하는 ‘My Sea’ 시리즈는 작가의 초기작으로 작가가 사진에 전념하는 계기가 된 작품이다. 작가노트에서는 ‘15세에 처음 본 바다는 후회와 슬픔, 증오 등을 모두 삼켜버리고 앞으로 향해 나아갈 수 있는 힘을 주는 것 같았다. 하늘과 바다가 맞닿아 그 경계가 희미해진 광경은 영원한 지속성을 상징하면서 경외심을 일으킨다.’라고 밝히고 있다. 작가의 대표작으로 손꼽히는 ‘파사드’ 시리즈나, 현재 작업 중인 극지방 사진보다는 좀 더 개인적이고 서정성이 느껴지는 작품이다.

한성필은 중앙대학교 사진학과를 졸업한 후, 영국의 킹스톤 대학에서 Curating Contemporary Design으로 석사학위를 취득하였다. 아라리오 갤러리(2015), 한미사진미술관(2016), 일우스페이스(2017), 아트스페이스 벤(2017), 블랑카베를린 갤러리(마드리드, 스페인)(2017) 등을 포함하여 다수의 개인전을 진행하였고, 국립현대미술관, 서울시립미술관, 휴스턴 현대미술관, 상하이 현대미술관, 동경사진미술관, 아르헨티나 국립미술관, 요쿄하마 트리엔날레, 하바나 비엔날레 등 주요 미술관과 비엔날레의 전시에 참여하였다. 최근에는 아이슬란드와 북극해의 레지던지 경험을 바탕으로 극지방의 사진을 통해 시간과 환경에 대한 탐구를 지속하고 있다.

2017년 10월 개관한 현대미술 갤러리인 AMC Lab은 동시대의 최신 흐름을 보여줌과 동시에 과거 및 미래와 연관성이 있는 미술작품을 전시한다. 시각적으로만 관람객을 사로잡는 것이 아니라 스스로가 스토리텔링을 하는 작품을 전시함으로써, 맥락을 만들어내는 전시를 선보이고자 한다. 전시는 작품이 관객과 만나 상호작용을 할 때 완성된다는 신념 하에, 작품이 놓여있는 ‘공간’이 아닌 작품과 사람이 만나 소통하는 ‘장소’ 로서 미술계와 현대사회에 유의미한 갤러리가 되고자 한다.

AMC Lab presents Subtle Moments, an exhibition by two artists, OH You kyeong and HAN Sungpil. Installation artist OH You kyeong created her installation work, Pagoda of Baram, by reconstructing Bonhyangdang, a village shrine found on Jeju Island, Korea. The people of Jeju Island, as a way of enduring the tough conditions of life on an island, prayed for their safety to their local gods at Bonhyangdang. By creating the space of a wish through the construction of a tower of crystal balls, the artist provides each of us with time to listen to our inner voice. Photographer HAN Sungpil presents a series of works entitled My Sea. In his photographs, the sky and the sea merge into each other, leaving only a vague impression of the boundary between them. The effect is a feeling of infinity, and the scenery makes us pause for a moment, lost in thought.

The works of OH You kyeong (b. 1979) explore natural cycles. Profoundly influenced by her travels around Ladakh in India, OH shows how our real lives are not nearly as substantial as nature, which exists for thousands of years. She attempts to create artworks inspired by natural phenomena. Her work in her residency program, run by Fondation d’entreprise d’ Hermès in 2012, focused on metal as her medium, and she has since continued to explore the boundary between materiality and immateriality. Most of her installation works consist of modules, which allow the birth of a new artwork simply by differences in assembly. This is exemplified by Pagoda of Baram, exhibited in this show, where a different combination of modules creates an entirely new pagoda. This flexibility is linked to the artist’s longtime subject: natural cycles. Pagoda of Baram creates a fantastic atmosphere through the reversal and clarity of crystal. The reflections in the crystal balls of the pagoda blur the line between reality and dreams.

OH You kyeong received her B.F.A. in Environmental Sculpture from the University of Seoul, Korea and her M.F.A. from University of Paris 8, France. She obtained a Diplôme National Supérieur d’Arts Plastiques (DNSAP) from École Nationale Supérieure des Beaux-Arts de Paris, France. She has held solo shows at Noam Gallery (2009), OCI Museum of Art (2011), Space K (2015), and Chapter II (2017). She has participated in group shows at Buk Seoul Museum of Art (SeMA), Ossuloc Tea Museum, Wooson Gallery, Gallery Baton, Sungkok Art Museum, and Palais de Tokyo (Paris, France), among others. She has participated in many artist-in-residence programs, including ones at Gyeonggi Creation Center, Goyang Creation Center, and Cité Internationale des Arts (Paris, France). Her works are housed in the OCI Museum of Art, Christian Dior Foundation, Hermès Foundation, etc.

The works of photographer HAN Sungpil (b.1972) reflect his various interests in the real and the unreal, in reality and imagination, in visual trickery, and in environmental issues, such as global warming and nuclear power. His representative series, Façade, is a unique artistic world built by the artist as he played with real landscapes and paintings on façades. The My Sea series in the present exhibition is some of his early work that led the artist to focus on photography. In his artist’s statement, he writes that he first saw the sea at the age of 15, and he felt that the sea had swallowed all regrets, sorrows, and hatreds and had given him the power to move forward. He continued working with scenery in which the sky and the sea merge into each other and the line between the two is blurred. He found the effect awe-inspiring, as it seemed to symbolize eternal continuity. The My Sea series is more personal and sentimental than the Façade series or his current working project on Polar Regions.

HAN Sungpil obtained his B.F.A in photography from Chung-Ang University, Korea and his M.A. in Curating and Contemporary Design from Kingston University, UK. He has held many solo shows, including ones at Arario Gallery (2015), the Museum of Photography, Seoul (2016), Ilwoo Space (2017), Art Space Ben (2017), Blanca Berlín Galería, Spain (2017), and Sin Título Galería, Colombia (2017). He has participated in major museum group exhibitions and biennales, including ones at Seoul Museum of Art (Korea), National Museum of Modern and Contemporary Art (Korea), Museum of Contemporary Art (Shanghai, China), Tokyo Metropolitan Museum of Photography (Tokyo, Japan), National Museum of Fine Arts (Buenos Aires, Argentina), the 12^th Havana Biennial (2015), and Yokohama Triennale (2011). He has continued to explore time and environment by photographing the Polar Regions since he participated in the artist-in-residence programs in Iceland and the Arctic Ocean.
